The traditions of Vallehermoso make up one of the richest festival calendars in La Gomera. The year revolves around the figure of San Juan Bautista, patron saint of the municipality, whose celebrations fill the main plaza and town streets with music, castanets, drums, and gatherings. The devotion, family atmosphere, and neighborhood participation make this festival one of the most anticipated moments, where the municipality clearly shows its community identity.
San Juan Bonfires
El punto culminante de estas celebraciones llega la noche del 23 de junio, cuando Vallehermoso vive sus emblemáticas San Juan Bonfires, declaradas Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Canarias. Tres grandes hogueras —en La Pilarica, Los Rosales y La Ladera— iluminan el valle mientras la imagen de San Juan recorre el pueblo acompañada por chácaras y tambores. El fuego se convierte en símbolo de renovación y tradición, y vecinos y visitantes se reúnen en torno a las llamas para celebrar una noche que combina historia, devoción y un ambiente único capaz de transformar el paisaje en un escenario luminoso y lleno de vida.
Descent of the Virgin of Carmen
Cada cinco años, Vallehermoso vive otra celebración muy especial: la Descent of the Virgin of Carmen, un acto profundamente arraigado que moviliza a todo el municipio. La imagen desciende desde la ermita de La Encantadora hacia el casco histórico, acompañada por cientos de personas en un recorrido lleno de emoción y simbolismo. Es una fiesta que une generaciones y que muestra la fuerza de la tradición religiosa en el municipio.
Neighborhood Festivals
Throughout the year, the neighborhoods of Vallehermoso also celebrate their own festivals that maintain the local spirit. Chipude, with its celebrations around the Virgin of Candelaria; Alojera, marked by coastal life and the palm honey tradition; El Cercado, linked to the craft of Gomeran pottery; and Tamargada, with its neighborhood participation and popular festival atmosphere, form a diverse and very lively festival map. Each neighborhood adds its identity to the whole, maintaining customs that define the social life of the municipality and preserve its traditional character.
